Pretoria – Former SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson has set his sights on returning to the Premier Soccer League as soon as the season resumes in February.
Johnson has been without a job since he was sacked by SuperSport United at the end of August and replaced by Gordon Igesund.
“I’m hoping that I’m able to get the right club now in order to get back into the swing of things,” Johnson told Sapa on Thursday.
“I need to get on the field again and I need to start as quickly as possible.”
After his heroics with Platinum Stars during the 2012/13 season, in which Stars finished runners-up in the Premiership, Johnson failed to hit the same heights with Matsatsantsa and was fired just six games into the current season, losing five out of the six matches.
Johnson says he had been in contact with a number of clubs enquiring about his services, but poor timing meant he ended 2014
without a job.
“At the end of the year, there were a few offers but because of the timing and everything closing, everybody went quiet again.
“Now with the Africa Cup of Nations, there is a whole month that nobody is doing anything so nobody really knows what’s happening now.”
Johnson could easily have had his pick of jobs at the time, with as many as four Premiership sides without a head coach.
Free State Stars sacked Tom Saintfiet in November shortly after Zeca Marques quit Moroka Swallows the previous month.
The University of Pretoria’s Steve Barker also resigned in November, moving to AmaZulu, before Orlando Pirates’ Vladimir Vermezovic ended his stint with the Soweto giants, less than a year into the job.
Asked whether he would prefer to stay in Gauteng after settling down in the province during his tenure with SuperSport, Johnson said he was happy to go wherever the job takes him.
“It’s not about being in Gauteng. I’m a coach and I’m looking for the right team with the right attitude and mentality.”
Tuks seemed to be the front-runners after Barker’s resignation, but Johnson remained coy on whether or not the Pretoria minnows best suited his criteria. – Sapa
