Johannesburg – The uncle of Orlando Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni was shot and wounded near KwaMbonambi on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
“It was (Sangweni's) uncle, not his dad,” commander at the local police station Colonel Brenda Mgenge said.
He was taken to a nearby hospital. An attempted murder docket was opened, she said.
Earlier, Orlando Pirates administrator Floyd Mbele said Siyabonga was not the shooter.
“It was not Siyabonga, it was one of his siblings,” Mbele said.
Which sibling it was, and the motive for the shooting, were still unclear.
Siyabonga, 31, has two brothers who play for clubs in the Premier Soccer League. Thamsanqa Sangweni, 24, plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, and Mandla Sangweni, 26, is goalkeeper for AmaZulu. – Sapa
