Amazulu goalkeeper Mandla Sangweni, the brother of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates star Siyabonga Sangweni, has been arrested for allegedly shooting his uncle over an argument about witchcraft.

The shooting took place near the uncle’s home in Kwambonambi on the North Coast on Friday.

Nono Sangweni said her father, Vusumuzi Sangweni, 66, was in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Nono said the weapon used belonged to another family member.

“My father was attacked. He was shot in his yard. He didn’t provoke anyone.”

Earlier yesterday, Orlando Pirates administrator Floyd Mbele confirmed Siyabonga Sangweni had been involved in the shooting. The gun belonged to the Pirates defender.

Conflicting media reports yesterday suggested Sangweni’s father had been shot.

But KZN police confirmed that it was the uncle who had been shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

An attempted murder docket had been opened, said Mgeng.

Siyabonga, 31, has two brothers who play for clubs in the Premier Soccer League – Thamsanqa, 24, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, and Mandla, 26.
