England international Kieron Dyer escaped unhurt on Monday after crashing his Ferrari on a Newcastle bridge in the early hours, police said.

However, the 23-year-old Newcastle midfielder's passenger suffered minor whiplash injuries in the incident on the River Tyne's swing bridge, which links Newcastle's quayside with neighbouring Gateshead's quayside.

Dyer's car was extensively damaged at the front. Northumbria police said no other cars were involved.

A spokeswoman said Dyer had been breath-tested and the results proved negative.

No action would be taken against him.

Dyer was banned for two months last year and fined £1 000 (about R15 000) after being recorded driving at more than 160km/h while returning to Tyneside from his home town of Ipswich, eastern England.

On Monday, Newcastle's 27- year-old Chilean international midfielder Clarence Acuna was banned for two years and fined £1 000 for drunk driving after the club's Christmas party. - Sapa-AFP
