Anderson reaches Oz Open second round

Johannesburg – South Africa's top men's singles player Kevin Anderson safely negotiated his way through to the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday.

He defeated Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in four sets, winning 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

He served 32 aces to Schwartzman's eight but dished up nine double-faults compared with his opponent's two.

The tournament's 14th seed meets Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania in the next round. Berankis is unseeded and ranked 85th in the world.

Anderson had moved up one position in the men's ATP rankings, released on Monday, to a career-high 15th. – Sapa
