Durban - Life must go on, says Kelly Khumalo, who was in Durban this week to promote her latest album, Back to My Roots.

The singer, however, admits she is battling to cope with the loss of murdered Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, adding there was no formula for coping with her boyfriend’s death.

Meyiwa was shot and killed at Khumalo’s mother’s house in Vosloorus earlier this month. The police have yet to arrest anyone for his killing.

Khumalo would not be drawn on Meyiwa’s death but shed light on how she was coping.

“God has given me strength to survive all the negative things said about me. I find solace in my daughter Thingo. She is still a child and does not understand what is going on.”

Khumalo’s single Asine, written by music producer Chicco Twala, has been making waves on social media platforms.

The controversial single is about a woman accused of killing her husband and, coincidently, was released shortly before Meyiwa was killed.

“It’s a song about a woman accused of killing her man, so during the court case she repeatedly says ‘It’s not me’. It had nothing to do with the incident and it was released in September. It is funny that it came at this time when I am going through so much pain,” said Khumalo.

Nearly 20 000 copies of the album have been sold so far, and it’s on the verge of reaching platinum status.

Umlazi Mega City Jet Music store manager, Bheki Nzimande, said the album was doing very well after a video on Asine was circulated on social media. He said the video showed Meyiwa singing alongside Kelly.

“This has had a great influence on the sales. We sell about five copies a day. It was not popular before the killing made headlines so I think people are making a connection. They are eager to know what the album is about,” Nzimande said.

Khumalo, however, is expecting a bumper festive season. Bookings for performances have been flooding in while she has been travelling around the country promoting her album.

Khumalo said she could not wait to perform in Durban because she knows that she has a huge fan base in the city.
