A close relative of Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa was arrested this week in connection with the hijacking of a policeman in a Durban suburb.

Maga Musa Artwell, 33, Mthethwa’s nephew, made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was remanded in custody.

He is alleged to have hijacked policeman Colonel Els’s Mercedes-Benz Vito from his driveway.

It is alleged Els was opening his garage door when a group of hijackers struck.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the men were armed with guns and made off with the vehicle.

One of the suspects was arrested later after he was found in possession of the stolen car.

A police source said the suspects were arrested after an informer provided information about the hijacking.

The source also confirmed that one of the suspects was related to the police minister.

Els described the ordeal as very traumatic and said he had been caught completely off guard.

Police investigations continue.
