A Phoenix man faces possible amputation of his leg after his enraged “on-off” lover, who saw him with another woman at a nightclub in Durban on Saturday, allegedly struck him with her luxury Mercedes Benz – and then reversed into him.

The 41-year-old man, who sells cars to dealerships, was admitted to Addington Hospital.

He told POST on Tuesday that his leg had been broken in four places after his ex-girlfriend, a 39-year-old financial advisor at a car dealership, intentionally knocked him over.

“My leg is badly damaged. The doctors are still assessing what needs to be done. It could be amputated,” he said.

He claimed that before the incident, the woman, also from Phoenix, had assaulted him at another nightclub.

She allegedly slapped him in front of other patrons and burst his eardrum.

A case of assault and theft was opened in that matter and she is currently out on R500 bail.

After Saturday’s alleged incident, the woman, represented by attorney Logan Padayachee, has been charged with attempted murder and was granted bail of R3 000 after appearing in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

According to the complainant, they broke up about six months ago.

Relating what had happened at the weekend, he said: “I went to the club because I saw my friend’s car parked outside. I was talking to the owner when she entered and started getting abusive. She then threw a glass of alcohol on me.”

He said he was embarrassed and decided to leave.

“While I was standing on the roadside near a stationary car, she got into her vehicle and drove into me. She then reversed and knocked me again. I was lying on the floor in pain when she got out of her Merc, looked and me, got back in and drove off.”

He said fellow patrons and bouncers assisted him.

“I was not speaking to another woman,” he insisted.

The man said his ex-girlfriend had laid numerous false assault charges against him over the years. He is also out on R500 bail in one of the cases.

The woman denied hitting him with her car.

She told POST she and a friend had gone looking for her friend’s boyfriend on Saturday evening. The friend opted to remain in the car, so she went inside the club where she was surprised to see her own boyfriend (the complainant) with another woman.

She said he offered her a whiskey but, believing it to be “spiked”, she threw it at him

.

As the minutes ticked by, they became “friendly”, she said.

At some stage, she claimed, he had taken two of her rings (valued at almost R50 000), from her back pocket without her knowing.

She said that when they eventually went outside, she and the woman he was with started arguing,

and the bouncers asked her to leave.

As she got into her car, the man was walking along the road, and took out her rings, dangling them in front of her: “I wanted them back because the rings are expensive,” she said.

“I swerved to avoid him and in no way whatsoever did I knock him and reverse into him,” she said. “I knocked into a parked car and my vehicle did not make contact with him.”

She told POST on Wednesday she had resigned from her job.
