Patrice Madurai has described her meeting with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth as “surreal and magical”.

Madurai received a Young Leader Award from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in London last Monday for her project, Cupcake ReSolution, which focuses on helping children whose births have not been registered with the Department of Home Affairs.

“Honestly, there are a very few words that can accurately explain the overwhelming emotions I have felt over the last few days. It’s been a surreal experience and one that I will forever remember and forever be grateful for,” said Madurai.

“The palace is beautiful and everything has a sparkle. When I received my award, Queen Elizabeth asked me where I lived in South Africa and said that she most enjoyed seeing the video about my project, which had been played as part of the highlights promo at the reception. I was so flattered and could not stop smiling,” laughed the 22-year old from Cape Town.

Madurai, one of three South African award recipients, described the queen as being elegant and regal. “She smiles a lot and is very softly spoken.

“After the formalities I had a chance to chat with her and David Beckham. I had the opportunity to tell them more about my project. I was in awe of them.”

The business science student said other highlights included a breakfast with the former prime minister Sir John Major and current Prime Minister David Cameron.

“We also had a tour of the Twitter headquarters in central London and the BBC offices. We spent time at Cambridge University where we have been participating in workshops and mentor sessions with industry leaders.”

Madurai said the trip had given her new opportunities.

“We’ve been made Associate Fellows for the Royal Commonwealth Trust and been given access to a network that extends across geographical boundaries.”

Madurai also enjoyed punting and playing croquet, but enjoyed the fish and chips the most.
