1 MICHAEL JACKSON AND LISA MARIE PRESLEY

Whoever either of these guys took up with, it was always going to be a strange matching, so at least they

found each other. But people have always wanted to know if they had sex, as there has always been a question mark over Jackson's sexuality.

Yes, says J Randy Taraborrelli, a close confidante and childhood friend of Jackson's who said: “He and Lisa appear to have had an intense and active sex life.”

Presley told a friend that he was “hot stuff in bed” and “amazing” - and she should know, the friend added, because “she's been around”. But sadly, the late King of Pop and the daughter of the King could not make it work.

When Jackson died, Presley said: “I am so very sad and confused with every emotion possible.”

2 SOPHIE DAHL AND JAMIE CULLUM

Earlier this year, the model turned novelist and cookery writer, Sophie Dahl, branded the media “weird” for its snide coverage of her relationship with the miniature pop-cumjazz musician Jamie Cullum. And she is probably right, I'm sure they have a lot to talk about. But there is just no escaping the fact that with her measuring in at a 1.8m, and he just a teeny weeny 1.5m, it's hard to look at them without wondering:

“how?”

3 JULIA ROBERTS AND LYLE LOVETT

It really was a case of beauty marrying the beast ... the only thing was, he didn't turn into a prince and there wasn't a fairytale ending. The world looked on aghast as the original Pretty Woman married her unlikely match, craggy-faced country singer Lyle Lovett, who, let's face

it, is no Richard Gere. But the marriage only lasted for a couple of years and the pair divorced in 1995.

4 BERNIE AND SLAVICA ECCLESTONE

One can hardly imagine what the Croatian former Armani model sees in the vertically challenged Formula

1 billionaire, Bernie Ecclestone. Probably those piercing blue eyes. But - believe it or not - it wasn't love at first sight. When Bernie first approached Slavica, at a promotional event in 1984, she didn't know who he was and gave him, her boss, a fake phone number. Thankfully, after much hounding, Bernie got his girl. They now have two daughters together, Tamara and Petra.

5 WOODY ALLEN AND SOON-YI PREVIN

Woody Allen was never the conventional sort, but breaking up with Mia Farrow - after 12 years together

- only to start a relationship with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, was pretty unorthodox by any standard.

The couple married in 1997, and now have two adopted children of their own.

Farrow and Allen's only biological son, Ronan Seamus Allen, said of his father: “He's my father married

to my sister. That makes me his son and his brother-in-law. That is such a moral transgression.” Quite.

6 WHOOPI GOLDBERG AND TED DANSON

Both actors. Both big in the 1990s. Other than that, it's hard to imagine that the New York-born Color Purple

actress and Arizona-raised Cheers star have much in common. But when they met on the set of Made In

America, in 1993, the pair took up together, despite Danson being married at the time. They later split, and have since accumulated five divorces between them.

7 SALMAN RUSHDIE AND PADMA LAKSHMI

The relationship between supermodel- cum-actress-cum-cookery writer Padma Lakshmi and the controversial author Salman Rushdie saw both parties turned into gossip fodder. But it was much more than a

case of her professional aspirations and his lust that saw brought the pair together, they explained.

Rushdie, 24 years her senior, married Lakshmi in New York in 2004. Lakshmi is said to have ended their eight-year relationship.

8 LIZA MINNELLI AND DAVID GEST

Who can forget the kiss? Just the memory of that terrible, ferocious meeting of teeth and tongues still

has the power to curdle blood. That was in 2002, at what was reported to have been a $3.5 million (R27m) wedding ceremony. One year later, they divorced. And, a period of mudslinging followed, with Gest accusing

his ex-wife of regular alcoholfuelled violent attacks against him, while she countered with a claim that he had tried to poison her, which she later retracted.

9 ARTHUR MILLER AND MARILYN MONROE

Raised a Christian, Marilyn Monroe converted to Judaism before marrying the Pulitzer-winning playwright Arthur Miller, in 1956. The longevity of their relationship was called into question by media at the time, and sadly, the cynics were proved right. Miller is said to have written The Misfits as a Valentine's gift to his wife, but by the time filming started in 1960, the marriage was all but

over, and a year later he married a photographer he met on the set of the movie. That's Hollywood for you.

10 CLAUDIA SCHIFFER AND DAVID COPPERFIELD

In what was surely the most impressive magic act of his career, the “quirky” illusionist David Copperfield

dated the German supermodel Claudia Schiffer for six years, in the 1990s. They met at one of his stage

shows in 1993, when he was invited to take part in a “flying stunt”. He later “sawed her in half”, while she

worked as his unofficial part-time assistant. The mind boggles.
