Randy Jackson is leaving 'American Idol'.

The 58-year-old producer - who stepped down as a judge last year but returned for the current season as an in-house mentor - is “proud” of his stint on the programme but thinks the time is right to move on to something new.

He said in a statement: “After 13 seasons, I felt now was the perfect time to leave 'American Idol'.

“I'm proud to have been a part of a series that discovered some incredible artists and will go down in history as one of the most successful television shows ever. A true original, 'Idol' started it all. Onto what's next.”

While he may be leaving the show, producers are hopeful Randy will still “visit” occasionally.

And show executives have thanked the long-serving star - the only person to have been with the show since it began in 2002, apart from host Ryan Seacrest - for all he has done in helping acts on the programme.

Fox, FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment said: “Randy has been such an integral part of 'American Idol' since day one, both as a judge and as a mentor.

“He's provided great advice and support, shaping the success of so many Idols we have discovered over the years.

“We wish him all the best in his next chapter. Randy will always be part of our 'Idol' family, and we hope he'll visit from time to time.” – Bang Showbiz
