GIG OF THE WEEK

Jah Seed and Admiral

Bassline, Newtown (Thursday)

For the longest time, one show has been a constant in the inner city. The Ragga Thursdays session is a reggae and dancehall event hosted by longtime friends Jah Seed and Admiral. They bring in hundreds of the genres’ lovers together from all over Gauteng.

Conceived in 1997, Ragga Thursdays is one of Joburg’s success stories. You will hear music from Diana King to Snow.

The ambiance is akin to something out of a Snoop Lion dream as everyone feels irie. Drinks, snacks and smokes are all available so just bring the cash.

While Admiral is big on spinning vinyl on the decks, Jah Seed has some interesting chants that are reminiscent of his time with Bongo Maffin.

You do not have to be a dancehall fan to enjoy your time at Ragga Thursdays as some of

the music will be familiar to you.

Raggae folks are notorious for taking well known songs and adapting them to Jamaican tunes, making it easy for everyone to sing along. – Munya Vomo

• Admission is R80 and the doors open at 9pm.
