GIG OF THE WEEK

The Waldorf String Band

Emmarentia |(Thursday)

The Waldorf String Band, which was formed in 1987, will play it’s last concert on Thursday. While it may be sad to wave farewell to the guys who brought us memorable folk music, they have done their time and need to retire from the music business.

The band includes Rael Birns (guitar, vocals, mouth organ), John Gnodde (banjo, mouth organ), Iaine McAlpine (fiddle, mandolin), Jimmy Smythe (flute, vocals), Alan Strang (guitar, vocals) and Nippy Cripwell (string bass).

With such an array of talented musicians, it is a pity they all need to end their journeys now. But, then again, these men have been at it for 27 years.

Between 1990 and 2012, the Waldorf String Band released nine CDs and three DVDs. During that run, in 2004, the band had great success with their Singalong Party album which outsold its compe-titors at the time.

After almost three decades of success, the Waldorf String Band have earned the right to retire and do so on Thursday. The event starts at 7pm and the admission fee is to be advised. For more info on the gig visit www.waldorfstringband.co.za or call 079 729 0294. – Munya Vomo
