Johannesburg - Does South Africa have a Biggie vs Tupac kind of hip hop rivalry on it’s hands? AKA and Cassper Nyovest, two of the hottest names in Mzansi music, have been engaging in an online Twitter war that nearly turned fatal on Friday night.
That is when, according to Cassper, a member of AKA’s entourage pulled a gun on him at the Urban Brew studios in Randburg.
Multi-award winning rapper AKA, and Cassper Nyovest - whose song Doc Shebeleza seems to rule the radio roost - have been at war over who is the top dog. The beef apparently started when Cassper claimed his song to be the most popular. AKA took exception. Both artists were scheduled to appear on SABC1’s Live Amp, but a shocked Cassper was unable to perform because of the threat of violence. He further claims that AKA assaulted his road manager Tshepo Seone.
“I feel this incident was unnecessary and it was a sad day for the entertainment industry in South Africa,” Cassper said in a statement.
“I chose not to fight back because I have lived a life of gangster violence before and walked away from it to pursue my music career.
“As a public figure now, what kind of message would I be sending out to the people who support me? I will be taking correct procedures to deal with this matter.”
According to the Daily Sun, Cassper has opened a case against AKA. as well as Prince Nyembe, the man who threatened him with a gun.
But AKA is having none of it, seemingly suggesting that Cassper has an overactive imagination.
“AKA is in this for the music and the fans. We’re not getting involved in publicity stunts,” said Vth Season, AKA’s management team.
“Our team doesn’t believe in violence or publicity and attention stunts.”
The rapper himself dismissed the incident on Twitter.
“Thought about it. Since I didn’t do anything I actually don’t owe anybody an explanation. No statements from me, just hit records (sic).” - Tonight Reporter
