THE second production in the Exhibition on Screen series focuses on the Dutch master, Rembrandt van Rijn.

Rembrandt: The Late Works is a documentary looking at an exhibition on at the National Gallery in London, which draws on material from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The exhibition focuses on the final years of Rembrandt’s life and the documentary looks at not only the exhibition but interweaves the artist’s life story with the behind-the-scenes preparation at both institutions. We get a glimpse at the man who is considered by many to be the greatest artist who ever lived.

The film features interviews with the show’s curators, Betsy Wieseman and Jonathan Bikker, while artist Richard Twose demonstrates Rembrandt’s painting techniques. Dolores de Sade shows his printmaking techniques, while philosopher AC Grayling provides insight into the artist’s self-portraits.

The feature also explores the evolution of Rembrandt’s artworks from his biblical masterpieces such as The Stoning of St Stephen (1625) to a key masterpiece like The Nightwatch (1642) and his later accomplishments such as The Jewish Bride (c 1665-9).

Acclaimed, award-winning British stage and screen actor Robert Lindsay narrates the 85-minute long documentary.

Rembrandt: The Late Works plays on Ster-Kinekor Nouveau screens on today, Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm and 2.30pm on Sunday.
