Happy Ending

DIRECTORS: Raj Nidimoru, Krishna D K

CAST: Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D Cruz, Ranvir Shorey

CLASSIFICATION: TBA

RUNNING TIME: 135 minutes

RATING: ***

TO enjoy this movie, you have to lower your expectations. The directors are able to achieve their Happy Ending purely based on the references to Bollywood’s romantic comedies.

Plot: Yudi (Saif Ali Khan) is a best-selling writer desperately seeking new material for a comeback. While doing so, he finds himself trapped between inspiration and unexpected love. A seasoned actor, Armaan (Govinda) goes to Hollywood to explore new possibilities and approaches Yudi to write a masala film for him.

Verdict: Fortunately, the film does not only deliver stupidity as it has an enjoyable balance of sensibility and comedy. The directors also have a message about love which surfaces amid the humour.

Often more alarming than hilarious, this rom-com offers just enough funny moments to earn the viewer’s interest. Thankfully, the parodies of romantic clichés come fast and furious in the first hour.

As far-fetched as the idea seems, it works as a new-age Bollywood love story. There’s no lack of material as the film-makers opt to draw emotion from the “sudden” love story to complete the scripting inconsistencies of their basic plot. It is here that the writers shed their comedic ambience for something more practical.

Saif’s performance is worthy of praise, particularly for his ability to portray the different shades of a mature lover. Govinda provides some of the film’s most hilarious moments and unforgettable lines. Ileana displays some very convincing acting skills. Ranvir Shorey and Kalki Koechlin provide some uncanny moments as the supporting cast.

Recommendation: Those expecting a riotous goof-fest may be disappointed as this movie offers some serious thoughts about love. Strictly for fans of rom-coms.
