Johnny Depp is one of the big new additions to the voice cast of the Gnomeo and Juliet sequel.

The Oscar nominated actor is set to voice the character Sherlock Gnomes in the 2018 animated film.

It was back in 2011 when Gnomeo and Juliet hit the big screen, which followed two neighbouring garden gnomes that were at war, and saw Kelly Asbury in the director's chair.

James McAvoy and Emily Blunt are set to reprise the central roles of Gnomeo and Juliet, while John Stevenson takes over the director's chair.

This will be the second feature film of Stevenson's career and the first since he teamed up with Mark Osborne for Kung Fu Panda back in 2008.

While there is still no news on other names that may be returning, Depp is the first new star to be added to the film's cast list.

Depp is no stranger to voice work but this will be his first animation project since the critical and commercial success of Rango back in 2011.

This time around, a string of garden gnomes have gone missing and Gnomeo and Juliet will have to call on the help of Sherlock Gnomes to find some answers.

As for Depp, he will be back on the big screen later this month when he takes on the role of notorious criminal Whitey Bulger in gangster film Black Mass. The movie is already being tipped as a potential Oscar contender and Depp could find himself in the Best Actor race once again.

Depp will also reprise the role of Mad Hatter next year as Alice Through the Looking Glass is set for release - the first full-length trailer for the film was unveiled last week.
