It’s a little disturbing when you need a book to give you advice on how to get a man, but with the success of titles such as He’s Not That Into You, it seems there is a market for such a thing.
The hype around this movie is that it is based on the best-selling novel by American comedian and actor Steve Harvey, called Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy and Commitment.
And that it’s in the romantic comedy genre means you know how it will all end.
The story follows a bunch of guy friends who turn the tables on their women when they find out that they have been using Harvey’s relationship advice on them.
The film does a good job of product placement and capturing the huge hype around this book, with Harvey shown promoting it in daytime shows and in some instances appearing talking directly to the audience.
Movies like this can’t be taken seriously because the idea of them is naive.
But the inclusion of comic Kevin Hart does something for its comedic quality. Just sight of the short man is funny. His style is infectious.
This boasts a good-looking cast. With Michael Ealy, Gabrielle Union, Meagan Good and Taraji P Henson, there’s a lot of eye candy to go around.
That Morris Chestnut gets a cameo towards the end is a classic tribute to movies of the courting game. And he has been in a lot of those – think of Two Can Play That Game.
This might as well be the 2012 version of the same theme, with Harvey’s book advice as the main difference.
