LOS ANGELES - Indie director Richard Linklater's coming-of-age drama Boyhood won three Golden Globes Sunday at a star-studded awards dinner in Los Angeles.

The film, produced over 12 years with the same cast, won best drama, as well as the best director prize for Linklater and best supporting actress Patricia Arquette.

The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson's quirky comedy about hijinks at a turn-of-the-century European resort, won for best motion picture, comedy or musical.

Julianne Moore won the prize for best actress in a drama, for her role as a university professor afflicted with early-onset Alzheimer's in Still Alice.

Amy Adams won the award for best actress in a comedy or musical for the second year in a row, for her role in Big Eyes as American painter Margaret Keane, who sued her husband for the rights to her own work. Adams won the award in 2014 for her role as a con artist in American Hustle.

Michael Keaton won the best actor in a comedy or musical award for Birdman, while Eddie Redmayne took the best actor in a drama for his portrayal British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

American actor JK Simmons won for best supporting actor, for his role as a sinister jazz teacher in the music school drama Whiplash.

The best foreign-language film award went to Russia's Leviathan, a drama about small-town corruption.

The film and television awards, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, features a gala dinner for some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

George Clooney, who received the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award at the event, made his first awards show appearance with his new wife, the British human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

The Golden Globes award 24 trophies for films and television shows, acting, directing, screenwriting and musical scores.

The Golden Globes, unlike other industry awards, split some key film awards categories into two fields: drama and comedy or musical.

In recent years, the Globes have often provided a look ahead to Hollywood's top prize, the Oscars, nominations for which will be announced Thursday.

The winner of one of the Golden Globes for best picture has gone on to win the best picture Oscar for three years running.
