Disney remastering their own material.

FILMS: Disney have re-released their 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty on Blu-Ray, timed to coincide with the release of their bit hit of this year, Maleficent.

The second film is, of course, the tale of the wicked witch from Sleeping Beauty, in live action, starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, who, according to this version, is a fairy.

Where Sleeping Beauty starts “Once upon a time”, Maleficent starts with the words: “Let us tell an old story anew and we will see how well you know it”.

If you are familiar with Disney’s Sleeping Beauty then you will love how so many of the sequences in Maleficent either mirror the animated film, or simply tell the story from a slightly different angle.

BONUS FEATURES

Maleficent: There are five features plus some deleted scenes that add a bit of info, but weren’t particularly integral to the storyline.

The features are about the CGI, how the characters were developed with input from Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie on their roles and basically how the filmmakers found the balance between respecting the old characters and finding something unexpected and a bit new.

SLEEPING BEAUTY: The audio commentary by John Lasseter, Andreas Deja and Leonard Maltin plus comments from the original creators and animators is interesting and the separate princess fun facts features trivia about the film. The short film which preceded the original Sleeping Beauty cinematic release, Grand Canyon, is included. This is a pictorial interpretation of Ferde Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite and illustrates vividly the change in animation taste over the past 50 years when it comes to attention span.

There is also a music video of Once Up a Dream, plus you can skip directly to the songs in the film.
