The internationally acclaimed biopic, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, has been invited to screen at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on January 24. Presenting the film will be producer Anant Singh, who is a recipient of the Forum’s Crystal Award.

The film’s screening marks the continuation of the initiative started in 2006 by Professor Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, to use motion pictures to highlight topical global issues. The screening will also be a tribute to Nelson Mandela who was a keen supporter of the forum.

Schwab said, “Everybody who sees Anant Singh’s film is moved by the trajectory of this most outstanding personality of the past decades, who was such a great friend of the Forum. This film reminds us to incorporate the spirit of Nelson Mandela into our mission and all our activities.”

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom continues to perform well at the South African box office and has become the highest grossing biopic of all time.

The film has earned R20.6 million in just over five weeks, outgrossing the entire run of the multiple Oscar-winning biopics The King’s Speech, The Iron Lady, Lincoln, Schindler’s List, A Beautiful Mind, Ray, and Gandhi; Oscar winners Walk the Line, Evita and Elizabeth and multiple Oscar nominees Invictus and Ali.

The movie has also grossed more at the South African box office than the multiple Oscar winner, Life Of Pi, which grossed R20.5m.

“The film gives audiences an opportunity to experience the amazing life of Nelson Mandela and be inspired by him. This is a film for all South Africans and we are thrilled that South African audiences have watched this epic film on the big screen at cinemas,” said Singh.
