Creature

Director: Vikram Bhatt

Cast: Bipasha Basu, Imran Abbas Naqvi

Classification: TBA

Running Time: TBA

RATING: **

CREATURE is a dismal portrayal of an Indian horror story that builds its significance on spiritual inclinations.

Plot

A young and enterprising girl, Ahana (Basu), launches a hotel, the Glendale Forest Lodge, in the hilly region of Summer Hill. It is here that she meets and falls in love with Kunal (Abbas), a renowned author.

Everything seems blissful for the couple at the hotel until Summer Hill is attacked by a “creature”.

Ahana is traumatised by the deaths of guests and the havoc created by the unsafe environment.

Help arrives in the form of a zoology professor, Professor Sadana (Mukul Dev).

Ahana is told that her competitor is the epitome of power and danger, but she decides to attempt to fight it.

Verdict

Most of the film centres on the protagonist’s mission to track down and fight the “creature”.

The twists are rarely chilling and only momentarily put one on edge, while the technical aspects are unappealing.

The final showdown is the most engrossing part of the film.

While the 3D effects and computer-generated-imagery aren’t much to talk about, there is plenty of gore.

The production budget was evidently limited and the visual presentation does not blend to make a worthwhile concoction. They could at least have found a few things to complement the story involving the brahma rakshas (demon spirits).

A highly predictable affair, saved by the decent effort of the star cast.

Bipasha is convincing in parts. Her character wavers between “action” and “romantic” and she barely manages to give a consistent performance.

Imran’s role is a minor part, but he makes an impact.

Recommendation

The result is something that is neither terrifying nor entertaining and is more along the lines of a B-grade horror movie.
