The Bling Ring

**

Lots of glamour, simply a fling.

FILM: What a disappointment. The Bling Ring is a perfect metaphor for today’s consumer and celebrity-driven society and yet you get the feeling that Sofia Coppola is so cut off from the world that she believed she simply has to put it out there and doesn’t have to take the story any further.

Really?

We know what is going on out there.

You have to give us more than a group of kids breaking into celebrity homes and stealing their clothes and jewellery.

Why are they doing it? What is it that’s so appealing to break into Lindsay Lohan’s house, steal her clothes and wear them the next day? It’s not to make money, it’s about the high of stepping into these celebrities’ lives when you step into their clothes. Even a TV host is more interested in a second-hand view of Lohan’s stay in prison than the young girl herself who did prison time for stealing her clothes. “Could you see her?” That’s what he wants to know.

And that’s what Coppola should have been concentrating on. She doesn’t give you more than this bunch of kids running from house to house collecting designer gilt, and even this is done disappointingly with no one really having enough acting chops, not even Emma Watson. Give it a miss. – Diane de Beer
