The momentum continues to build around the release of Vijay’s awaited new film, Kaththi. In this article OneIndia.in’s Ramchander takes a look at the film and the courtroom drama preceding its release…

IT’S all good to go for the latest AR Murugadoos film, and Vijay-starrer, Kaththi, which is set to hit the local big screen on October 23.

Shortly after a courtroom victory, which saw the director accused of plagiarism regarding Kaththi, he and the Vijay had to contend with protests at the movie’s audio launch in Chenai last month.

Some Tamil groups raised concerns over the sources of funding for the film and where is was shot.

In an emotional address at the launch, the director said that he is a Tamilian by birth and would die a Tamilian.

“I have worked in Telugu and Bollywood. But I only know Tamil. The only reason I have done films outside Tamil Nadu is because I wanted to prove that a man from a small village 200km away from Chennai could make films that a whole country would appreciate.”

Vijay said he is from Tamil Nadu and a proud Tamilian: “Kaththi is made (for) people to enjoy and not to divide the people.” He added that the movie would “do all the talking”.

Kaththi has overcome a number of hurdles on its journey to the big screen, including the court case against Murugadoos.

The plaintiff, Gopi Nainar, had dragged the director to court after accusing him of stealing his creative property. The court, after hearing the arguments from both the parties, dismissed the case for lack of evidence.

Nainar, in his petition, had claimed that he was a former associate of AR Murugadoss and that he had narrated a story to the Thuppaki director. He went on to allege that the director, without his consent, made moderate changes to his story and it went ahead as the Kaththi project.

Nainar claimed that he has neither been paid nor given credit for the story, which forced him to take the legal route to seek justice. However, there was no proof of his claims. Thus, his petition has been dismissed.

The Tamil movie which also stars Samantha alongside Vijay is an action romance thriller.

Bengali actor Tota Roy Choudhury plays the antagonist’s role, an international gangster who goes by the name of Vivek Banerjee. To track him down, the cops need the help of a criminal mastermind (Vijay).

After a cat-and-mouse chase in Kolkata’s dark, dingy gulleys, Vivek is grievously injured and put behind bars. He swears revenge against Vijay, but when he next meets him, Vivek realises that the man is a dummy of the original.

The film also marks the second big release for Samantha after Anjaan in which she was paired opposite Surya.

Anirudh Ravinchandran is responsible for the music in Kaththi.

• Kaththi opens over Diwali at Suncoast Cinemas on October 23 and at SterKinekor Cinemas on October 24.
