The Planet of the Apes franchise has been one of the best reboots in recent years and filming is under way in the third film in the series.

Yes, the cameras are rolling on War for the Planet of the Apes and will see Matt Reeves once again in the director's chair. Reeves took over the helm for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - which was one of the best movies to hit the big screen in 2014.

I am excited to see him back in the director's chair and on writing duties with Mark Bomback. And it was Reeves who took to Twitter to tell fans that filming had begun and release the first image from the set:

War For the Planet of the Apes will see Andy Serkis back in the lead role of Caesar - he really has brought this character to life in the last two movies and calls for an Oscar nomination have not been exaggerated.

Serkis is joined on the cast list by Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn. However, nothing is known about the film's plot.

It was back in 2011 when Rise of the Planet of the Apes hit the big screen; an origins story that saw Rupert Wyatt in the director's chair. Again, it was one of the best movies of that year and kicked on the new franchise in fine style.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes followed three years later and was the nine highest-grossing movie of the year as it took in excess of $708 million at the global box office and was a critical smash.

Sadly, we have a long wait until the release of the film as War for the Planet of the Apes isn't set to hit the big screen until 21st July 2017.
