The TAMIL movie Masss, which stars Surya, Nayantara, Amy Jackson and Premgi in the lead roles, has hit our screens.

Venkat Prabhu had revealed that Suriya’s characterisation in his upcoming film Masssu Engira Massilamani will have grey shades to it, thus providing a new experience of sorts to Suriya fans.

Interestingly, it is now being reported that the director first approached Suriya with an entirely different script that would have portrayed him in a negative role.

According to the report, Venkat had planned a Tamil-Telugu bilingual with Suriya and Telugu star Ravi Teja in the leads. When Suriya was informed about his character, it is said that he didn’t want to feature in a film that would show him in bad light.

What’s more, Suriya told Venkat that these kinds of roles would suit actors like Ajith or Vijay and that he was interested to work in a regular Venkat flick with the usual fun elements that he brings to the table.

Also, like many recent movies that had to undergo a title change, Masss too has faced the same restriction, thanks to the tax exemption rules. If a film doesn’t have a Tamil title then it loses its eligibility to enjoy tax exemption even if it is cleared by the Indian film Censor Board. Hence Masss had to be rechristened.

Premji Amaren has also spilt the beans about Suriya’s character and the meaning of “Masss”, in context with the film. “Suriya’s character name in the film is Massilamani and he will be called “Masss” by the locals so we have named the film, Masss Engira Massilamani, said the actor.

Looks like the film aims to woo family audiences as promised by the director even before the project went on floors.

Masss Engira Massilamani stars Parthiban, Samuthirakani, Jayaram and Pranitha Subhash in prominent roles. It also has two comedians and a comedienne in Premji, Karunas and Vidyullekha Raman respectively.

The movie is shot in 3D, a first in Tamil cinema. Nayantara plays one of the female leads, along with Amy Jackson. The director’s brother, Premgi Amaren, was given a significant supporting role, as in all of Prabhu’s films.
