The Out in Africa SA Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, launched in 1994, runs at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and at Hyde Park in Joburg from April 1 – 10.

This year’s festival offers eight features and two short films.

In addition, Joe Graham, the director of Strapped, will be present at the festival.

Two additional seasons of the festival are scheduled for August and October this year, offering viewers the best of queer cinema from around the world.

The dates of these festivals at Nu Metro Hyde Park, Jozi, and Nu Metro V&A Waterfront, CT, are: August 12 – 21 and October 21 – 30 .

Bloomington

2010 USA 83 mins

Dir: Fernanda Cardoso

A romance emerges between Jackie, a former TV child star, and her college professor, Catherine, who is swift in her seduction of the undergrad.

Buffering

2010 UK 70 mins

Dirs: Darren Flaxstone and Christian Martin

Lovers Aaron and Seb are having financial troubles. Aaron’s plan is to put their private life up on the web, but he doesn’t tell Seb, leading to obvious and inevitable consternation.

The Cost of Love

2011 UK 90 mins

Dir: Carl Medland

Dale, a male escort based in Greenwich, London, appears to have it all, including clients with strange tastes. Life, of course, has its own way of sorting itself out.

Dare

2010 USA 92 mins

Dir: Adam Salky

High school drama erupts when Alexa is prompted to pursue bad boy Johnny, but so is her best friend, Ben, leading to a twisted love triangle. Good script and performances with cameos by Sarah Bernhardt and Alan Cummings.

Two half-brothers’ fraternal bond stretches the boundaries of societal conventions. This film caused controversy in Brazil upon release, but Abranches avoids sensationalism.

Recipe For A Killing

2010 France 60 mins (French with English subtitles)

Dir: Emmanuelle Bercot

Things get bloody in a small restaurant in a vineyard when hardboiled teen Aline comes up against the repugnant owner, Gerard. Violent, dark and hilarious.

Strapped

2010 USA 93 mins

Dir: Joseph Graham

This dreamlike tale follows one rent boy’s long night in an apartment block. He is there initially for one client but random encounters lead to his seeming inability to escape. The film is funny, sweet and offers quirky insight into gay culture.

We Have to Stop Now

2009 USA 79 mins

Dir: Robyn Dettman

Dyna and Kitt, both therapists, enter therapy themselves when their co-authored guide to negotiating relationships, How to Succeed in Marriage Without Even Trying, hits the best-seller list and they are forced to relate. Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono star.
