DURBAN legend Steve Fataar has touched the hearts of many over the years with his music since the inception of The Flames.

However, the 71-year-old has faced health problems because of a lung infection so Live – The Venue, together with a host of local artists, have teamed up to throw Fataar a benefit concert. The artists include The Reals, The Hairy-Legged Lentil Eaters and comedy/music duo Graham Boyle and Spider Murch. There will also be an appearance by Fataar and his son, Dane.

As the compere of the show, Boyle shares his reasons for wanting to be a part of the concert: “I’m a solo musician and have known Steve over the years and know his abilities and contributions in the music industry, starting from the old times when people of colour played in so-called white venues. I’ve also admired his South African style of music. And we’ve became friends over the years.”

On hosting the benefit concert for Fataar, Boyle says: “He’s come across with some health problems so we decided to do a benefit for him to help him through the hard times. And there were suggestions that we try to get The Flames together and back in South Africa for this concert and make it a huge event. However, the other brothers are so busy overseas and wouldn’t be able to make it.”

Boyle informs me that all the artists have offered their services free of charge, which attests to the depth of their relationship with Fataar.

“We chose the artists. It was a discussion between myself and Steve and also taking into consideration the available entertainers. We spoke to The Reals, and they were keen to help. I approached Hairy-Legged Lentil Eaters and Spider Murch and I will perform as well. And there will also be some guest artists playing. Steve will participate and will do a set with some of his biggest hits. And the Arts and Culture Department has offered some assistance towards the event so we’re glad to have the support,” he shares.

According to Boyle, those who attend can expect a good time: “I’ve had a lot of calls about it and will be expecting a mixed audience. Steve has got a huge following in every corner and it’s totally mixed. I’m also expecting it to be a mature crowd. We don’t expect thousand of youngsters, although there will be a few, but more adults.”
