THIS year’s South African Music Awards (Samas) are a mere 10 days away, and the annual talent showcase is promising a new host and glitzy goodie bags for the celebs involved.

After being without a host for two years, the Samas has announced renowned rapper Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP) as the man who’ll be at the helm of the live broadcast of the 21st instalment of the awards show.

Diane Chidrawi, the publicist for the event, said: “It’s fitting that someone who has made such a rich contribution to the South African music scene, not to mention outside our borders, having snagged a coveted MTV Africa Music Award for best video in 2009, has been chosen to host South Africa’s most prestigious music awards event.”

Having HHP as a host may be what excites the audience on April 19, when the ceremony takes place at Sun City, but the celebrities involved have more to look forward to.

“At the (SAMAs), the cele-brity goodie bags are sure to be almost as sought after as the Sama trophies themselves,” Chidrawi said.

“These exclusive goodie bags will be handed out to the on-stage presenters and live performers at the awards; an extravagant thank you gesture with a combined value of almost R2 million.”

The goodie bags include e-cigarettes, Ray-Ban sunglasses, a Converse watch, Swarovski

crystal earrings for the women and a bracelet for the men, and a John Craig wallet, to name a few.

“Booking has opened at Computicket.com, and gallery seats at the Superbowl are available at R375 each, with golden circle tickets costing just R130 to get up close and personal with all the awards action,” Chidrawi added.

Those who want to stick around after the awards have ended can buy tickets to the after-party for R495, also at Computicket.

To local music lovers, Chidrawi said: “The beautiful and talented people of Mzansi will be congregating to raise a glass to quality South African music.

“Bag your ticket today, but if you can’t be there, make a date with your TV set and couch for 8pm, when SABC1 will screen the South African Music Awards live.”
