ABDULLAH Ibrahim will present a show at the Talisman Foundation in Rosettenville on Friday at 7pm.

Proceeds of the concert will go to the Talisman Foundation which is a psycho-social rehabilitation centre that houses 200 residents who suffer from forms of mental illness.

Talisman Foundation chief executive, Aadiel Essop, said he approached Ibrahim a while ago and the jazz legend was quite amenable to helping them out: “He supported the idea right from the outset.”

Now 80, pianist and composer Ibrahim is known for giving intense solo concerts, transporting the audience for up to 90 minutes of melodic magnificence.

While the foundation is partially funded by government, most of their running costs come through corporate sponsorship, which is sporadic and hard to get.

While they have organised fund raisers before, this is the first time the foundation has drawn on a huge star like Ibrahim: “Having a big name like him is helping us to get noticed, and getting the media to pay attention to us,” said Essop.

• Check www.talisman.org.za for more info about the centre which is at 58 Plinlimmon Rd, The Hill Extension in Rosettenville. Tickets: R250 to R400. Call 011 435 0727 to book.
