NATHI

Buyelekhaya

****

Pure talent.

Nathi is what’s missing in South African music today. Of course, hip hop rules the airwaves and the little room that’s left goes to the DJs. So where does that leave a soul singer like Nathi? Not where he should be.

In his debut album Buyelekhaya, Nathi gets you thinking about your roots, the simplicity of life and the true definition of ubuntu. His music is honest and well-packaged to make you sing along while you ponder the subjects he touches on. The title track, Buyelekhaya, is a child’s lament on the fact that his father left home for the city and rarely returns or sends money home. Nathi’s husky voice is full of emotion, enough to paint the seriousness of the situation.

Another hit is Nomvula, which has the same pulse as Zahara’s Loliwe. Then there is Nomakanjani, a playful joint which he got stable mate Vusi Nova to help out on.

Nathi makes music that is easy on the ear and warms the heart. – Munya Vomo
