Certain journeys are a matter of faith

Should somebody scream "Oooh - hee!" whom would it make you think of? If you said the pint-sized dynamite Jam Alley presenter and Lesedi FM DJ, Twasa, then we are on the same page.

What some of her fans may not know is that apart from these jobs, Twasa is also a talented rapper with a sophomore gospel album release to prove it. Named It Was Written, the album has kwaito, house and hip-hop influences.

"The sound of the album is very street," she said. "I kept it as much me as possible. The traditional gospel-feel songs could not be left out as they form the very foundation of my musical influences," she added.

Sung mostly in Sesotho, It Was Written has 12 craftily-written tracks that generally speak of the virtues of keeping a strong relationship with God.

"It is a compilation of my journey at different points. I went into the studio and recorded what came at the time."

Born Seipati Seoke, Twasa grew up in Qwa Qwa in the Eastern Free State. She lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her father and brother.

"I actually became a DJ by accident," she revealed. "I went to auditions in Bloemfontein for the on-air personality position. Within four weeks of non-stop prayer for it, I was offered a contract by Lesedi FM," she said.

On why she specifically chose gospel music, Twasa said the word "gospel" means good news and she is always delighted to spread it.

"The good news is that Jesus Christ has settled our debt of sin and that man no longer has to be a prisoner of sin, but can now live in a relationship with God."

Has she ever had a problem with some conservative Christians who frown upon presentation, especially on television?

"I have found that a lot of people wonder how I can be on Jam Alley while I am a Christian. But then I always explain that there is nothing that I do on Jam Alley that contradicts the teachings of Jesus Christ," she said.

"Christ came that we may have life, and life in abundance, and that included fun (the clean type), excitement, laughter, dancing and playing. Christians should be some of the most excited people on earth. What we have in Christ is like no other, therefore Jam Alley is a platform for me to share my energy and excitement about life."

Twasa is also working on a non-gospel project that will see her collaborate with Lesedi FM's Ba2cada.

"It is a compilation dance album with some studio recordings we did together. The album is called Ba2cada vs Twasa Vol.1.

She promises that more projects will be coming her fans' way soon.
