If Twitter trends are to believed, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are coming to town.

And yesterday an apparent concert poster was leaked on Twitter and the blogosphere. The grainy image advertises that the Red Hot Chili Peppers will play at the FNB Stadium in Joburg on February 2 and in Cape Town on February 5, “with support from Die Antwoord”. It says; “Tickets on sale from Computicket” and the logos of Big Concerts, M-Net and 5FM can be made out.

But Big Concerts have remained tight-lipped. They only say they intend making an announcement on 5FM radio on Monday.

This has led to further speculation that Gareth Cliff may in fact announce a Justin Bieber concert. In recent months both Bieber and the Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith indicated via Twitter that they intend performing in SA.

But diehard fans are hoping for the Red Hot Chili Peppers – and for good reason.

The group shot to fame with their revolutionary 1991 album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and then went on to record albums like One Hot Minute, Californication and 2006’s Stadium Arcadium.

Aside from their alternative, hard rock funk music, the musicians’ personal lives have added to the mystique that is the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Jade Orlin, spokesman for 5FM, said all he could say was the announcement set for Monday involved a big international act.

In July, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith responded: “OK then… We’re coming in Feb!” to a Cape Town tweeter who tagged him and co-bandmate Flea in this tweet: “It’s not a world tour if you don’t come to Africa. @RHCPchad @flea333”.
