GIG OF THE WEEK

HEELs OVER HEAD FREEDOM EVENING CELEBRATION

Jazzy Rainbow (Tomorrow)

THERE’S a special Freedom Day celebration tomorrow, the evening before Freedom Day, at the Jazzy Rainbow in Morningside. All-female jazz sensation Heels Over Head (pictured) will be the main source of entertainment.

This day is especially significant for Heels over Head.

The group’s drummer, Rebekah Pillay, says: “If not for democracy in this country, we would not be allowed to be together as a unit in this band and perform on one stage.

“We would like to celebrate this through music and with our fans.”

Heels over Head have been around a while and the girls keep busy on the popular and private circuit with their particular brand of smooth jazz, which cunningly combines contemporary African musical phrases, evocative popular African standards, dance-inducing rhythms and happy melodic vocals.

Dressed to kill, they present well, combining glamour and warmth. Their latest offering, Sondela, has just enough of the African jazz feel to keep it in the ring with well-trained voices and strong rhythms.

The line-up of the evening: Thulile Zama (vocals), Nomkhosi Mazibuko (vocals), Rebekah Pillay (drums), Susan Barry (keyboards) and Arianna Carini (keyboards).
