With Monday’s announcement that the Foo Fighters will be touring South Africa in December, the list of mega-rock bands who have performed in the country over the past 20 years is now complete.

Since the Rolling Stones in the early 1990s, Big Concerts has brought every major rock band – from Metallica, Coldplay, The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Korn and, more recently, US icon Bruce Springsteen.

Now it is the turn of Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters. They will be playing at the FNB Stadium in Joburg on Saturday December 13, after a gig at Cape Town stadium the Wednesday before.

The rock band is known for their powerhouse live performances. The tour will coincide with the release of their eighth studio album, which is due out in November.

The album release will, in turn, be preceded by Sonic Highways, which is a series documenting the recording of the album.

It is directed by lead singer Grohl, who was first known as Nirvana’s drummer. Nirvana is the band that changed everything with their release of Nevermind in 1992.

A year after lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, Grohl formed the Foo Fighters in 1995.

Grohl is an internationally acclaimed authentic rock musician who has never compromised his independent creativity. Sonic Highways is his second time as a director – his first being the award-winning documentary Sound City.

The band has won 11 Grammys and sold more than 25 million copies.

Tickets go on sale on Thursday from 9am at Computicket or www.bigconcerts.com - The Star
