AS THE Vodacom In The City festival draws near, four bands, The Kiffness, PHFAT, Bye Beneco and The Plastics all hope to be the one band that will be playing the October 3 gig.

Over the past few weeks a competition has been run, with the four groups competing for the one available spot to play at Vodacom In The City. Whichever act wins will open for the likes of Rudimental, MGMT, Crystal Fighters and The Presets. The announcement of the winning group will be made later today but Tonight caught up with all four to find out how they are doing.

THE KIFFNESS

What would playing at Vodacom In The City Mean to you?

It would mean that we get to high-five all the famous international bands backstage.

With acts like MGMT, Rudimental, Crystal Fighters and The Presets on stage, what do you as a band have to offer fans?

We’ve made an 8bit cover of MGMT’s Kids that we made especially for this show (which you can watch on our website www.thekiffness.com). It would probably be the ultimate opening song for the event. We also have a fully loaded live electronic show packed with live instruments, visuals and dancing that we’ve been crafting for the past three years.

There are a few other groups that would also want this chance, why should it be you?

Because I drew this picture of a potato.

PHFAT

What would playing at Vodacom In The City Mean to you?

It would be another big opportunity for us to do what we really love. Which is throw a huge rap show that catches everyone who sees it off guard.

With acts like MGMT, Rudimental, Crystal Fighters and The Presets on stage, what do you have to offer fans?

There is an old saying, “talking about music is like dancing about architecture”. Our music is available free online. (Type PHFAT into google.) If you don’t like it then please don’t vote for us. Speak to your friends who’ve watched us live. If they tell you we suck then please don’t vote for us. We ain’t politicians bro, we make rap music. Our shows are the opposite of boring.

There are a few other groups that would also want this chance, why should it be you?

There are lots of people who would also love to be president. Should we give it to the person who wants it the most or the person who will do the best job?

What would playing at Vodacom In The City Mean to you?

It would be a privilege and an honour to share the stage with some of our favourite international acts.

With acts like MGMT, Rudimental, Crystal Fighters and The Presets on stage, what do you have to offer fans?

We have a unique stage presence and are starting to take our performance to different levels. We are keen to get a little freaky.

There are a few other groups that would also want this one chance, why should it be you?

We are the smallest band in the running, however we think we have something quite different to bring to the South African music scene, something that people don’t only want to dance to but to also engage with on other levels. Some people tell us that we take them on a visual journey.

The Plastics

What would playing at Vodacom In The City Mean to you?

It would mean a great deal! We would be the South African representative artists at the event, getting the chance to play with such great artists. MGMT especially is a band we love.

With acts like MGMT, Rudimental, Crystal Fighters and The Presets on stage, what do you have to offer fans?

Our music is complementary to this particular line-up given that all the artists have a dance element tying them together and that’s something we focus our energies on – groove. We wouldn’t be out of place here. We’re half way into the recording of our new EP so there will be new tunes to treat the crowd with. The timing means some of them would quite likely be premiered at VITC, should we play.

There are a few other groups that would also want this chance, why should it be you?

The past year, since Emile joined us on guitar, has been a period of us really honing our craft and coming up with new music we feel represents a big stage well. We’re all in a good space in terms of how we play together and would be able to deliver a special performance.
