FRED Wesley (pictured) has been described as one of the best soul and funk trombonists of his generation, and rightly so.

He toured with the Ike and Tina Turner band and played and recorded with the “Godfather of Soul”, James Brown (1967-70) and (1971-75) including Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud. Brown said: “We speak of love and happiness: for me happiness is Fred Wesley playing his horn.”

Wesley also played with the Count Basie and can be heard on some of the band’s Pablo recordings. Besides leading his own band he can be heard on recordings with Hank Crawford, George Benson, the JB Band and Maceo Parker among others.

JamBase.com wrote: “Fred Wesley is the undisputed funkiest trombone player in the history of music.”

This funk master, along with Dwayne Dolphin (bass), Brian Cox (drums) and Joel Johnson (guitar) will perform at the Wits Theatre on November 29. Theatre only seats 380, so book early at Computicket. – Tonight Reporter
