On November 30, thousands of little monsters will be crawling out of the Johannesburg woodwork for the mother of all parties. That’s when five-time Grammy Award winner Lady Gaga will bring her Born This Way Ball to South African shores for a two-date tour that kicks off at the FNB Stadium, and wraps up at Cape Town Stadium on December 3.
Known for her outlandish dress-sense and, at times, controversial music videos, the Poker Face hitmaker and her army of dancers and technicians will be dishing up an eye-catching musical spectacular, judging by the press her most recent shows have generated. Though she encountered fevered resistance to her work in Indonesia, where religious authorities protested against the morality of her music, the many other cities Gaga has played in, as part of an exhausting world tour that first kicked off in June, have certainly fallen under her spell.
As the Mother Monster herself has explained: “The Haus of Gaga and I have worked for months conceiving a spectacular stage. The Born This Way Ball is an Electro-Metal Pop-Opera; the tale of the Beginning, the genesis of the Kingdom of Fame. How we were birthed and how we will die celebrating.” The supporting act is the reformed British rock/pop group The Darkness.
Gaga will be performing songs from her Born This Way, Fame and The Fame Monster albums, which means local fans can look forward to renditions of such favourites as Born This Way; Edge of Glory; Alejandro and Bad Romance. The strength of these hit singles has seen Gaga sell an estimated 23-million albums worldwide. In an age in which any celebrity worth his/her salt has a presence on social media sites, Gaga reigns supreme with 52-million likes on Facebook and 23-million Twitter followers. No wonder then that this meat-dress wearing popstar was voted Forbes' Most Powerful Woman in the World in 2011, and also made Time Magazine’s top 100 influential people’s list in 2010.
Tickets for The Born This Way Ball go on sale on-line only for both cities Tuesday, June 19 at 9am from www.computicket.com. All standing room tickets will cost R715, while the prices for seated tickets start at R315. Tickets will only be available at Computicket outlets and via the Computicket call center on Thursday, June 21 for Johannesburg, and Friday, June 22 for Cape Town.
