GIG OF THE WEEK

Freshlyground & Matthew Gold

Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens (Sunday)

Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens (Sunday)It is refreshing to know that Freshlyground will be in Gauteng at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens (end of Malcolm Road Poortview, Roodepoort).

The group, who are in high demand, always have several live performances away from these parts so when they finally grace us with their presence, we notice.

There are many songs that the band have done since their 2002 debut so we are spoilt for choice.

The band is made of members from several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa. This attribute gives them an interesting view on the world and subjects to sing about. Songs like Chicken To Change was a satire on Robert Mugabe’s leadership in Zimbabwe. The band was subsequently banned from performing there.

There have also had classic hits like Doo Be Boo off their second album and WakaWaka which was a 2010 World Cup hit done in collaboration with Shakira.

Joining them on Sunday will be rising singer Matthew Gold. After making it to the Top 12 on Idols SA, Gold was picked up by Soul Candi who helped produced his Sama- nominated album, The Rush. Gold is a prolific songwriter and has a lot on his creative plate. It’s will be great to see how these acts merge on the same stage. – Munya Vomo
