GIG OF THE WEEK

Michael Bublé

Coca-Cola Dome

(tomorrow)

We have to give it to Canadians. When it comes to conquering the world through music, they really go for it. Seriously. We have legends like Celine Dion, Drake, The Weeknd and the troubled Justin Bieber. Even crooner Robin Thicke was born to a Canadian father so perhaps the talent is in the water.

However, one of their best exports has to be Michael Bublé. He is a four-time Grammy winner who has given us hit albums

like Crazy Love and Call Me Irresponsible. While he doesn’t have the voice most male singers of his age do, it’s that aspect that differentiates him from the rest. He sings in simple, low, clear registers the way Luther Vandross approached his songs, but the impact of this is that he comes across as honest. Female fans love honest male singers.

As Bublé prepares to sing at the Coca-Cola Dome (cnr Olievenhout Ave and Northumberland Rd, North Riding) tomorrow night, we remember some of the best songs he has done over the years. Songs like Me And Mrs Jones, It Had to Be Tonight, Save the Last Dance For Me and You Don’t Know Me come to mind. Yes, some of his greatest works are covers, but if gospel singers get away with recycling hymns, then we not recycle classic pop numbers?

He has done material with the likes of fellow Canadian, Nelly Furtado, and Boyz II Men. South Africa is blessed to have a fine singer grace our stage.

• Tickets: R510 to R1 135 through Computicket and the show starts at 8pm.
