GIG OF THE WEEK

Jack Parow

Cafe Barcelona |(Tuesday)

When it comes to success in South African entertainment, the one thing you have to get right is the art of crossing over. We have our cultural, racial and religious differences which sometimes inform what we consume on the entertainment market. Take music, for example. There are those who love gospel music which is said to be the top-selling genre.

It is closely followed by traditional and Afrikaans music. Then there is house and hip hop. Now, if you look at the albums in these genres, it is safe to assume that there are very few people who buy all of them. We all have our musical tastes and are comfortable to stay in those genres.

This does not really reward the musicians as they can only depend on their core fan base. This is where the power of cross-over comes in. Think Paul Simon on Graceland and the magic he made with Ladysmith Black Mambazo or Oliver Mtukudzi and Ringo Madlingozi remixing Into Yami in their respective languages. Both parties can now share their fans and get more through the process.

This is what has made Afrikaans rapper Jack Parow (pictured) big. He has the funniest rhymes but at first other communities had no access to his music.

Now things have changed because he has broadened his scope allowing non-Afrikaans musicians to work with him and in turn expose each other to more listeners.

Just last week he shared a stage with KZN kwaito star Professor at Bassline.

This means the best of two worlds collided and both parties won.

• Parow will be Cafe Barcelona (Elardus Park Centre, Barnard St, Elardus Ppark, Pretoria) on Tuesday. Tickets: R80. 8.30p
