GIG OF THE WEEK

K.O. and Kid x

Taboo, Sandton (Tonight)

There is no doubt Teargas’s KO has ruled the South African hip hop scene this year. The intro-duction of kwaito-infused hip hop, now known as skhanda, has seen him rise to dizzy heights.

He has taken a formula that was previously hard to find and made it his own, leading the way for other up-and-coming youngsters. His hit single, Caracara, is definitely going to earn him awards. It’s a party track that talks about the old model VW bus which was used by kids back in the day to go to parties.

The video to the song shows simple dance moves done by KO and his guest stars who include Nomuzi Mabena, Slikour and

Ma-E.

The song features new-kid-on- the-block, Kid X, who is a very talented rapper. His voice is almost identical to KO’s, but their rapping styles differ. Kid X does wonders on Caracara as a featured artist, but he shows that he is versatile on his own material, including the hit Pass N Special.

We are talking about this pair because they form the headline act at Taboo (24 Central, shop no 10, cnr Gwen Lane and Fredman Dr, Sandton) tonight in their birthday bash. Apparently, the pair celebrate their birthdays this month, making rap not the only thing they have in common.

Gigs like this always mean other rappers will be there in support so don’t be surprised to see AKA who has a hot single

with KO called Run Jozi. Ma-E will most probably be there to give us the addictive hit, uGogo.

So come through and see what these dudes have in store for you. It will cost you R150 to get in and the gig starts at 10pm. Tel: 011 783 2200 for further information. – Munya Vomo
