When you start a band as teens in a garage, the plan is usually to make it big. Some people make it and others don’t. In Bryan Adams’ Summer Of 69, the Canadian singer sings, “Me and some guys from school; Had a band and we tried real hard; Jimmy quit, Jody got married ;I should’ve known we’d never get far”.

Unlike his teenage group which disbanded after going nowhere, local group P.H.fat will not have to worry about disbanding soon as they have a bright future.

After going up against several groups in the Open The City competition, where they would form part of the Vodacom In The City line-up, the electronic rap group is now looking at a career-changing performance.

The pair will open for international acts that include The Rudimental, MGMT, Crystal Fighters and The Presets on October 3 at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown. We caught up with P.H.fat upon the announcement of their win and this is what they had to say…

Congratulations on your win P.H.fat, has it sunk in yet?

Yeah, we’ve even started preparing for the gig already.

What campaign did you run to make sure you would be set apart from other bands?

We just kinda tried to stay sincere and not be too hard-sell. In these voting situations, it’s coolest to win if you didn’t push too hard.

Which international act are you looking forward to meeting the most?

We’ve learnt to leave the poor international acts alone when they come here. It’s cooler when it is a more sincere interaction than, “oh hi (mister/missus famous person), We’re from the opening act and like music. Do you also like music?”

What should your fans expect from your set?

We’re not even sure yet. We’re still putting it together, which is cool Because it gives us a chance to surprise ourselves. Hopefully, if it surprises us, it will surprise you lot too.

What is PHFAT up to over the next few months, new music? Performances?

At the moment, we are just locked deep in the writing space working on a new release of some sort, which is always nice. Except, I don’t think we’ve ever done a release where at the end of it, it didn’t feel like the release was actually out to get us. We might drop some new tracks at In The City actually.
