Riky, $tilo and co: all the president’s men

Riky Rick and $tilo Magolide are standing outside a house in Joburg’s northern suburbs. The latter listens intently while Riky Rick points out the plan.

“After Umswenko,” Rick asks. “Very simple. ‘Can I get a $tilo Magolide’,” he chants.

The pair, along with Okmalumkoolkat, who are all part of the Boyzn Bucks move-ment, will perform at the Castle Lite Embassy party at the Nasrec Expo Centre on Saturday.

When I meet them, Rick is suggesting their posse cut, Umswenko, announce their arrival on stage. They have come together to figure out the order in which their solo songs should be performed. With more than one hit single each already on radio or TV, I wonder if it is a tiresome task.

“It’s never difficult to put together a show,” starts Rick. “The nice thing about it is every time we get together, it’s a special thing. These are the moments that we wait for. When we can put everyone’s songs together. That’s why everyone’s been working so hard. For this event, we’ll have more production, lighting, dancers – it’s the next level in terms of what we’ve always wanted to do as Boyzn Bucks.”

$tilo (which is pronounced Steelo) Magolide agrees and when I ask them which of each other’s songs will be their favourite to see on stage, he doesn’t hesitate.

“I think he should perform Sondela because the game right now, everyone is trying to be turn up and nobody’s actually talking to people and touching them on a real level,” says Magolide, “so it’s a blessing that you get to have a platform where you can share such messages with whomever is listening.”

Rick confesses: “I always want to jump on when $tilo performs Mr Party; it’s probably going to be my favourite moment on Saturday.”

The purpose of the Castle Lite Embassy event is to inaugurate a president of the Republic Of Extra Cold (a real place in Plett) from the three candidates: Sizwe Dhlomo, Pearl Thusi and Warras.

Magolide and Rick are in agreement about who should be sworn in.

“I really like Pearl, I think she’s a flame,” Magolide pauses, “but Warras is my man, so it’s a tricky one. But if Pearl Thusi just keeps twerking, then definitely her.”

Rick says he thinks Pearl will probably become president because “she has more to offer”. But what about if they could choose themselves to become presidents of their own islands? Magolide says the first right in his constitution would be “if you’re not dope, you can’t come to my island. If you don’t have swag, you get deported. If your Instagram account is not popping, you get deported.”

Luckily, Magolide isn’t in the running to be the republic’s president.

Don’t miss Boyzn Bucks as well as Moneoa, Black Motion, Cassper Nyovest and more on stage.
