South African artists did not do too badly at the recent MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs), but Nigeria dominated by taking home the big accolades. The best male category went to the Nigerian singer Davido, while the best female was clinched by Yemi Alade. In total, Nigeria took eight of the 17 categories, while South Africa had five.

The highlight wins for the country were undoubtedly Cassper Nyovest's Best Hip Hop for his album Tsholofelo and AKA's Best Collaboration for his hit song All Eyes On Me.

Although he won in absentia, Trevor Noah got the nod for the Personality of the Year award. Last year the award was won by Academy award winner, Lupita Nyong'o and this year Noah faced stiff competition from soccer star Yaya Toure, and TV and radio personality Bonang Matheba.

Nigerian twin brothers P-Square showed up to accept the Best Group and Artist of the Decade awards and they also gave impressive performances.

Although there have been pleas in the past that the main host be African to connect with the audience, the organizers still went with American comedian Anthony Anderson. However, unlike last year when the host, another American TV personality Marlon Wayans, struggled with hosting, Anderson actually did well. His comic timing was impeccable and the audience reacted positively.

Performances of the night came from several artists, who included Ne-yo, Cassper Nyovest, P-Square, AKA and Jhene Aiko.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the MAMAs and South Africa was privileged to host for the second time in a row at Durban's ICC.
