Johannesburg - If you ask Robin Schulz what makes a successful party night for him, he’ll tell you it’s when the audience “completely flips out”.

The German DJ is hoping that his Joburg fans will be up for a party on Saturday night when he takes to stage at the Sound of Light music festival at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

Schulz arrived in the country on Thursday night for the music festival, which began in Durban on Friday night. The festival moves to Joburg on Saturday night and ends in Cape Town on Sunday.

It is the first time that the internationally renowned DJ has performed in South Africa. He’ll be headlining the music festival, and will be joined by such top local DJs as Goodluck, Pascal & Pearce, Beat Scientists, Cassie, Park and Syzo B.

Schulz, famous for songs like Sun Goes Down (featuring Jasmine Thompson), Headlights (featuring Ilsey) and Prayer in C, has risen to fame in the past year, and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including David Guetta and Coldplay.

The electro-deep house DJ has notched up 17 number one chart positions. His song Prayer In C has claimed more than 40 iTunes top positions worldwide, and he is the only German act to have achieved more than 200 million views on YouTube.

South African act Pascal and Pearce say they have been looking forward to sharing a stage with the renowned DJ.

“We’re super-amped – been looking forward to this one for a while, and excited that it’s finally here,” said Dave Pearce. “It’s really cool to share a stage with a big international act – you really have to make sure you bring your A game.”

Pearce and Pascal Ellinas are long-standing fans of the German DJ.

“We appreciate all good music. The crowd will go mad when he plays Sun Goes Down,” said Pearce.

He also can’t wait to take to the stage to get the crowd on their feet.

“We’re really excited to be performing at all three shows. We’re definitely going to be showing people a more chilled side to our music, nice laid-back beats to help set the vibe.”

Pearce added that they would also be switching up their sets for each of the cities.

“We always try to play to the crowd.

“Obviously we do some prep beforehand – we choose a whole bunch of songs that feel right, and then make a playlist. But the final selection is always on the night.”

Asked about songs their fans could expect to hear, Pearce said: “We won’t give anything away just yet – but we’ll definitely be previewing one of our latest collabs.”
