South African rapper Cassper Nyovest says he will donate all proceeds earned from his concert in Bulawayo to foreign nationals affected by xenophobic attacks, while remaining adamant that he will travel to Zimbabwe despite threats being made against him.

A post on social media told him not to set foot in Zimbabwe, warning him to advise South Africans to bring the violence to an end, lest he suffer the same fate in the neighbouring country.

This comes after a wave of xenophobic attacks swept across the country this week, resulting in at least five deaths and leaving many injured and displaced.

In an Instagram post that he shared on Thursday, Nyovest (real name Refiloe Phoolo) reiterated his determination to proceed with the tour. ”What’s happening at home is disgusting, but I am going to Zimbabwe. I will not live in fear to be in the hands of my brothers. I want to donate all the proceeds for my show in Zimbabwe next week to xenophobic survivors. I will perform for free,” he said.

The threatening post which sparked the reaction reads: “Dear Cassper Nyovest, tell your people to stop xenophobia or you’re not welcome! Yours Zimbabwe.”

Nyovest responded on his social media accounts, saying: “I do not support xenophobia, therefore my show in Zimbabwe is still on for April 25. My Zimbabwean fans are gonna come to my show. We are one Africa, therefore we will dance together.”

This incited mixed reactions from his followers, who either supported his stance or advised him to postpone his show.

Zanele Tshibale said: “Just out of respect for the dead, postpone the show.”

Rue Valindra said: “We love you Cassper, but we love our brothers more, and we will show our love and respect for them by moaning and not dancing and giving you the little money we should be saving up for funerals.”

Tshepiso Mokoena said: “At least they warned you, so if anything happens, don’t cry foul.”
