Competitions:

The fifth instalment of the Unisa National Piano Competition will include a jazz piano category running parallel to the traditional classical category. It will take place from July 11 to 18 in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on Unisa’s Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria. Senior piano students 28 years and younger are invited to submit entries by February 27 to the Unisa Music Foundation. Prizes total R190 000. Panellists include Ruth Goveia, Malcolm Nay, Elna van der Merwe and Wessel van Wyk with Neil Gonsalves, Paul Hanmer, Roland Moses and Andre Petersen on the jazz piano panel. Professor Karendra Devroop, deputy director of the Unisa Music Foundation, will serve on both panels. Auditions:

Johannesburg Youth Ballet is holding auditions for its 2015 company on Saturday and Sunday at the National School of the arts. JYB will hold separate auditions for junior and senior dancers. Candidates: boys and girls must be 12 years and over and have had significant ballet training. Juniors at the level of Intermediate and Intermediate Foundation and must be between 12 and 15 years. First round starts 2pm on Saturday and finishes 3.15pm. The senior daners will audition at 3.30pm and finish by 4.45pm. The senior group caters for Advanced Foundation and Advanced 1 & 2 dancers 16 years and over. All candidates should be at the venue by 1.30pm for registration. Auditions will include pointe work so bring pointe shoes. There will be a call back audition should the management need to see candidates again, on Sunday between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Successful candidates will be notified by the end of February.
