London - Tom Hanks has been nominated for his first Tony award.

The 56-year-old actor is up for Best Performance by an Actor for his debut role on Broadway in the play 'Lucky Guy'.

Tom plays the lead role of newspaper columnist Mike McAlary in the Nora Ephron play, after forming a friendship with the late writer.

Tom - who previously starred in 'You've Got Mail' and 'Sleepless In Seattle', both written and directed by Nora - was overcome with emotion at the show's opening night earlier this month saying he missed Nora, who died of leukemia aged 71 last year.

Speaking after the performance, he said: "That was a tough moment. We were going to do this, and Nora and [show director] George C. Wolfe were going to walk out on stage. I miss her. What more can you say?"

At the Tonys Tom is up against Tim Sturridge for his role in 'Orphans', Nathan Lane in 'The Nance', Tracy Letts for 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' and David Hyde Pierce in 'Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike' for the Best Actor gong.

Australian comedian Tim Minchin has been nominated for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre after his success with 'Matilda The Musical', based on the famous children's novel by author Roald Dahl. Tim's show is up for a staggering 12 awards at this year's ceremony, competing against the stage adaptation of 2005 film 'Kinky Boots', which has 13 nods.

'Kinky Boots', which features the music of pop singer Cyndi Lauper, sees both its stars, Billy Porter and Stark Sands, up for Leading Actor in a Musical as well as scoring a nod for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre.

The Tonys will take place at New York's Radio City Music Hall on June 9.
