Johannesburg - Kris Jenner used her new talks show as a platform from which to shoot down President Barack Obama’s criticism of what Jenner’s daughter Kim and her rapper boyfriend Kanye West represent.

In a recent interview, the US president lamented the effect popular culture had on today’s youth, stating that it caused a shift in their dreams and aspirations.

"I do think what's shifted is a notion that the wealthier you are, the more conspicuous consumption you engage in. The more successful you are, the more society should stay out of your way as you pursue the bigger house or the fancier jet or the bigger yacht," Obama said.

"Were there things that all of us might have liked to have? Sure. But partly, I think, there also has been a shift in culture. We weren't exposed to things we didn't have in the same way kids these days are.

Obama spoke of a time when a daily “window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous” did not exist.

“Kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success,” he said.

Jenner did not take kindly to the president using her daughter to make his point.

On her show, ‘Kris’, the 57-year-old hit back, saying: “I wasn't aware that you could only set the bar so high and that we could only dream so big.”

However, the statement that seemed to hit a particularly sensitive nerve with Jenner, was: ”The American Dream involves pretty basic things: a good job where you felt some security, a good education... I don’t think people went around saying to themselves ‘I need to have a 10 000 square foot house’.”

Jenner mentioned that her daughter owned one such home and - short of calling the statesman a hypocrite - said: “I bet the President has some friends with 10 000 square foot houses and he probably wouldn’t mind going over there when asking them to have a party for campaigning for dollars to run for president.”
